Spinal Deformity (Scoliosis and Kyphosis)

Spinal deformity is an abnormal curve of the spine: sideways (scoliosis) or a forward hunch (kyphosis). Small curves are monitored; large or worsening curves may need correction surgery. Dr. Ramkrishna Dahal is fellowship-trained in spinal reconstructive surgery.

Symptoms

  • Uneven shoulders, waist or hips
  • A hump on the back when bending forward
  • Forward-bent upper back
  • Back pain or tiredness on standing

See a doctor urgently if

  • A curve getting worse quickly
  • Leg weakness or numbness
  • Back pain with fever or weight loss

Treatment

First: Regular check-ups with X-rays, bracing for growing children, and exercises.

If needed: Deformity correction and spinal fusion with screws and rods.

Questions

Can scoliosis be treated in adults?

Yes. Surgery is considered for adults with pain, nerve symptoms or a worsening curve that other treatment has not helped.
